About Jennifer Thoden
Expertise
I can answer all questions related to sewing window treatments... roman shades, window valances and drapes. I am glad to help troubleshoot a design or an issue with a project. I will not offer detailed instructions on exactly how to make a window treatment from scratch. I can also help with sewing home decor and quilting questions. Plus sewing techniques.

Experience
I run a sewing projects web site http://www.SimpleSewingProjects.com where members can enjoy step by step video tutorials on how to sew a project... learn sewing techniques... and print illustrated step by step instructions. The sewing projects range from window treatments, home decor, clothing, tote bags to fun projects. I've been running my online sewing publishing business for about 10 years. I also produce a weekly video podcast show called HowToSewWithJennyT.com showing viewers how to sew.

Sewing - basement windows

Expert: Jennifer Thoden - 10/3/2009

Question
I want to make window treatments for two basement windows.  Each window is in an 5.5ft. alcove.   The top edge of the window frame is only 1 inch from the ceiling and the window is only 2 feet long.  The windows are not centered to walls of the alcove.    I am thinking of using a decorative shower tension rod and making flat flip-top panels so that the window would appear centered on the wall.    Any thoughts or suggestions?   Thank you.

Answer
I see your design dilemma!

I would install a dust board from wall to wall. A dust board is a 1" x 3" board cut to the desired width. In this case about 5.5 feet.

I would then sew a 2.5 foot long flat panel that is 11 feet wide. With some shirring tape or even with some thread, gather the top edge to equal the width of the board.

Staple the valance to the board and install the board along the ceiling but on the wall using L-Brackets.

I wouldn't use tension rods, because they fall, and I don't even know if you can get them that wide.

To add to this idea, I would sew some floor length drapes and install those on each side. This will add some color, drama, and visually make the space cozy and inviting.

Hope this helps

Jenny T.
