Question I have been sewing for almost 60 years & should know the best
stitching to use for a heavy wool coat. I almost always hem by hand except some blind heming on slacks & etc. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate knowing the correct stitches to use to hem a heavy wool coat.
Thanks so much - Marty
Answer Dear Marty,
I would use a catch stitch to hem a heavy wool coat. It is a matter of personal preference how close you make your stitches. I have used this stitch on many heavy weight fabrics and find it more secure than the regular blind hemming. This link illustrates the catch stitch as well as many other stitches. http://www.sewing.org/files/guidelines/22_140_hand_stitches.pdf
I must say that I am flattered you asked me a question with your years of sewing experience. Thanks for your question.
