Question
I need to alter a pair of jeans for my mom.  They need to be one size smaller.  She has lost weight and the jeans are still like new.  They have no zipper, elastic waist, and are straight legged.                                   Thankyou so much,                                     Jenny Newman

Answer
Dear Jenny,
For a one size difference, you could either take up 1/4 inch on each seam or 1/2 inch at either side.  I don't know how the elastic waist was originally sewn, but if you can, take the elastic out, then take the hems out. Then make your alterations on all four seams, reinsert the elastic and adjust it to fit and sew.  I probably would not bother with taking up the inner leg seams since the pants are straight legged. If the crotch seam is at the right length now, taper the seam in to the 1/4" just after the curve of the crotch in the front and back.  That way, you won't alter the length of the crotch but you will be taking up the hips and waist.

If you need further clarification, please write back and I will try to help you some more.  Good luck with your alterations.
