Sewing - converting coverlet

Expert: Vinette de Phillipe - 3/6/2009

Question
I purchased an old crib coverlet and I want to make it warmer for the baby.  I have never done anything like this before.  The coverlet is completed with the cutest applique and trim all the way around.  It all seems to be made of cotton.  I want to put some material or batting in the middle and then a nice cotton fabric on the back and I'm not sure where to start.  I am going to do it all by hand, no machine.  How do I go about it?

I've seen batting for sale in Walmart and other stores that is rolled up.  Is this what I should get?  Or should I just buy a cheap blanket and cut it up?  How can I approach this since the trim is already attached to the coverlet?  How can I attach the batting without it moving around on the inside since I am sewing the back on by hand?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you,
Joan

Answer
hi Joan

What you can do is make an envelope from the coverlet, the batting and the backing fabric.

The batting you see at Wal-mart is fine,  that is where I get mine.

here are the steps

1. place the coverlet, right side up on a flat surface.  I use the floor.

2.  place the backing on top of the coverlet, wrong side up.

3. place the batting on top of the other two.

4. pin all the way around,

5. stitch, leaving an opening so you can turn it right side out when finished stitching

As to the trim, fold it to the inside of the coverlet before stitching the layers together, then it will be on the edge when you turn it right side out.

check it when stitching to be sure the trim stays inside

hope this helps
