Sewing - What clothing cut/ fabric/ detail require tailoring

Expert: Jenna McAuliffe - 5/23/2009

Question
I am going to have my wardrobe tailored as I have to mingle with the rich snob and they look down on anything that can be found in the mass market.  Would you kindly suggest me what type of cut, fabric, detail etc that are found in bespoken only and not off-the-rack.  Alternatively, pointing me to any website/resource is also greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Lisa!

Any garment can be mass-made or individually created and/or tailored.  A simple skirt for example, can be bought off the rack, or made by a skilled dressmaker.

The difference is in the quality, the fabric and the fit.  That simple skirt may be made in a cheap polyester from a factory, but can be made in a fine wool or silk by a tailor.  The making is usually a lot better when tailor-made, and the skirt is made to fit you perfectly at the time it is made.

with many garments it is visually difficult to tell what is factory made and what is tailor made. If you want suggestions on what is most important to have tailor made, go for jackets, pants, dresses and any couture or catwalk type styles you can imagine.

Hope this helps :)

Jenna
