Sewing - fitting a pattern to these measurements

Expert: Sharon Vogel - 5/22/2009

Question
this person is 4'11 with a chest 35.5, a bust 37.5 a waits of 39 a hip of 38 back of neck to waist 15.5 what size do I pick for this person to help with an easy fit?

Answer
Dear Ann,
When picking a pattern size, consider the style of the garment and how the person wants the garment to fit.  Someone with these proportions is not going to have an easy fit in most women's patterns because of the waist measurement. The following length shows sizing for McCall's patterns.  http://www.mccallpattern.com/charts/bmisses.htm
If you are choosing a blouse or top, use the bust measurement because it will be a better fit in the shoulders.  So, using the McCall's measurements, it would be a size 14 and you will make adjustment at the waistline.  I would also choose a pattern that fits loosely around the waist.  Most patterns have lines for shortening the overall length of the garment.  In this case, for pants or skirts, I would choose an elastic waist, unfitted hip style still using the size fourteen and cutting the waist to hip area straight down.  For a dress pattern, I would look for a style that is not fitted at the waist or hip and again use the size fourteen pattern so that the shoulders fit.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

Good luck and happy sewing!

Sharon
