Sewing - how turn a narrow tube right side out

Expert: Claudia Buchanan - 6/4/2009

Question
I am making a cushion for a rocking chair. I need to make the ties to tie the cushion to the chair. I cut strips 1 inch wide and I want to fold them in half, and stitch on the wrong side. How do I turn them right side out without tearing the fabric? I am using cotton.

Answer
Roberta,

It can be done with a lot of patience.  Sew one end closed and then use a pencil or something very small and pull the fabric over the end of the pencil, slowly advancing the fabric over the pencil until you get the strip turned right side out.

If were me, I would fold the fabric and top stitch in on the right side of the fabric with matching thread, no one will notice and it would be much less work.

Good luck with your project, send me photos of your chair and cushion.
