Sex Toys - Allergies to toys

Expert: Katie D. - 3/19/2009

Question
I have found that twice now I have gotten thrush after using a sex toy.  Granted both times the sex has been fairly rough and I have been a quiet sore after.
Im not sure if its just the roughness or the toy that is causing the problem.  Have you heard of many toys that cause thrush?

Answer
Thrush is a yeast infection. The thrush could be from multiple things...
1. If you used lubrication and you or your partner touched your vaginal area first then opened and applied the lubrication you could have been contaminating the lubrication which inhibits growth of yeast.
2. If your partner performed oral sex on you he/she could have had a thrush infection in the mouth...which is really common believe it or not.
3. Are you cleaning your toys with a cleaner made for toys after each use? Reason I am asking, you vagina has yeast naturally in it, when the yeast grows out of control that is when you get an infection. If you were not cleaning the toy appropriately or just wiping if down then you could be placing "old" yeast back into your body causing the yeast to over produce.

Also are you sure its thrush? Has a doctor confirmed this? If not you could just has an allergic reaction from the plastics used in the toy which is common as well. I personally have one toy that if I use gently I am fine but if I go in a fast speed or be rough then I am burning & itching the next day which resembles thrush or a yeast infection. Hope this helps! If you need anything else let me know...Katie D.
