Expertise
If you require any shareware or freeware software for your pc or want to know whats the best shareware or freeware in any category i can help. From anti-virus software to peer to peer sharing programs to online games to pc game mods/patches to word processing software. I will find you good freeware/shareware software thats virus free, lag free and hopefully cost free. Note: i can find you the software but i cannot find serial numbers for shareware for illegal purposes.

Experience
i have spent a few years searching all sites and trying all sorts and freeware/shareware software to aid me in computer security, music converting, pc game patching and mods and even word processing.

Education/Credentials
i did ICT in high school for 5 years, which was all about database software, then continued into A level computing for a year, which was antivirus software and programming.

Shareware/Freeware - Can you recommend a program for this?

Expert: gary - 9/9/2008

Question
QUESTION: I am not a programmer, nor am I very computer savvy. I would like to describe what I am attempting to accomplish and see if you can tell me which program that you can recommend, if any.
I have 3 sets of designs that I am trying to merge together into one picture.
I have 111 designs of SET "A" or the top section. These designs only cover the top third of a page.
I have 12 designs of SET "B" or the middle section. These designs only cover the middle third of a page.
I have another 111 designs of SET"C" or the bottom section. These designs only cover the bottom third of the page.
The best way I can think of to describe how the entire page will look is found in the grid shape of the old video game BERZERK. See the attached Google image of the game screen and you will get an idea of my designs, top, middle and bottom.

What I want to do is:
1. Enter my designs into some database amd name/number them.
2. Start with SET A, #1; at the top of the page, add SET B, #1; and SET C, #1 AT THE BOTTOM. Then I have my 1st picture and I save it. ( Then as an example...I go on... SET A, #1; SET B, #1; and SET C, #2... and so forth.)
3. I would progress with STEP 2 until all possible 147,852 combinations have been merged. Not all of them will work for my purposes, so not even 20% will be saved. However, that will still leave about 29,000 to save.

I will need some sort of program to:
1. Be able to enter the 3 designs sets into or import the designs from some other acceptable program.
2. A program that has the tool(s) to quickly (and somewhat automatically) keep the images moving as I hit the save or delete button.
3. I will need to be able to save and name the ones that will work for me and eventually copy them to CD.
4. I would like to be able to have all in a saved set to be able to be viewed as thumbnails( maybe 12 to a page).

My idea is similar to the TV commercial where you are looking at the image of a person, their complete front.
The head is the top section, then torso the middle section, and the legs are the bottom section.
For the purpose of my analogy: the head will change from one face to another, the torso will chamge different clothes, and the legs will change trousers and shoes, etc.
I call it the "mix and match" effect.
The purpose for this example is the effect that I believe I need to rapidly and efffectively catalog my merged designs.

Am I asking too much? I know it will take forever to review all these designs. However, I am just not a programmer and do not even know how to begin to set the parameters to let the computer autumatically draw and eliminate useless designs. I will be happy if steps 1 through 4 can be accomplished.

I thank you for your answer, time, consideration and wonderful website. JD

ANSWER: hi thanks for your question.

i understand what you are saying.

However i dont understand what kind of program you are looking for?

are you looking for a program that deals with paint and pictures like photoshop?

a program that plays different images like powerpoint?

a program that creates 3d art and models like blender?

a program to create a mini-game like realityfactory?

a program with a database like excel only for pictures?

please add a follow-up if you would like me to continue trying to help with this question.

i do understand what you are saying though im unsure the type of program you are after and what you would like.

thanks

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks for such a speedy response!
I don't need a paint program. I am not interested in these designs being in color. The grids that I can create through an Excel-like program would be more advantageous in my accuracy in my designs.
I don't need a picture program as no photos will be included.
I would not know the first thing about 3D art, although it sounds very interesting.I just need the designs to be in 2D.
I am not trying to create a mini-game.
An Excel-like picture database also sounds great but is probably beyond my scope of experience to operate. I would like to know where to find this type of program for investigation "someday".

That leaves a Power Point-like program that will play different images. As long as I can blend the top, middle and bottom together on every picture that I will save then that will work.
I will need to enter my SET A (TOPS), as well as my SET B (MIDDLES), and my SET C (BOTTOMS) all manually into the programs database.
On each page the used space will only take up one-third of that page, as it would if all three sections were on one page.
Then my hope is to have a program that will blend the three sections together as I direct. I previously discussed how I would systematically catalog each design possibility. I wonder if entering them on an opaque sheet or some kind of layering would blend them on one page and allow me to save them?

I also hope that I can thumbnail all my saved pictures (completed blended designs) so as to comparison view, as well as save them to CD.

All my sheets of the same SET will share the same outside borders ( all TOP SET, no borders for the MIDDLE SET, and all BOTTOM SET). They are exactly like the borders in the game diagram that I sent you initially. Same shape, same size. The only thing that will differ will be the line placements within the grids. This is what makes for all the possibilites, the different line placements within the grid.

I thank you for dealing with such a novice as myself. JD

Answer
hi thanks for your question and follow-up.

the easiest way i could think of for scrolling through your designs would be powerpoint. After some research powerpoint is still rated number 1 in the presentation software ranking. you can get it here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/default.aspx

also to help i found http://www.ehow.com/how_2156551_blend-images-background-powerpoint.html which tells you in powerpoint how to blend different pictures together as a background to look like 1.

to burn it on re-writeable cd your saved images i would recommend free cdburnerxp pro as this program easily allows you to delete some files of the cd if it goes wrong.

from a little research i found a program called (picture merge genius) it is shareware however the idea is to merge several pictures into 1 by resizing etc with easy-to-use tools you cud use this program to create the full pictures from the 3 sets save them then re-open them as a slide show on powerpoint as a full version.

see what you think at www.easy-tools.net/picture-merge.

or theres a program called MERGE which might better suit you at  http://www.graphicutils.com/merge/ (it will only merge 2 pictures at a time so you would need to merge top and middle save it, re-open it merged then merge the bottom with that.

thanks
