AboutDave Expertise My wife and I are active Sheltie owners. Helpful hints on discipline, training, disposition, selection, and of course acquisition. We think like dogs, so we can help you understand yours!
Experience 2 Shelties currently owned. Rescued and placed 9 dogs (3 non Sheltie).
Question We have had both Astolet and Carmylie Shetland Sheepdogs for many years. We SAW two 11" Shetland Sheepdogs at a bench show in Harrisburg, PA in April 2006. The breeder was from Chester County, PA. They were miniature Shelties in every respect. Do you know anything about this? (Our Shelties are typical - beautiful and perfect "mudders". Full of energy...totally different personality wise) Thanks for your help.
Answer Hi Patricia!
It sounds like you have some nice heritage there. So I assume you mean you saw 11" at the shoulder height or you mean 11" from the ground to the top of the head high?
If the Sheltie was 11" at the shoulder that would be toward the low end of the curve for the breed but perfectly acceptable.
If the Sheltie was 11" meaning about 4-6" at shoulder then that is a bad gene mix and too small to be recognized and should never be bred. That size has increased health problems and perpetuation of that gene pool is not good for the breed.
