Experience 2 Shelties currently owned. Rescued and placed 9 dogs (3 non Sheltie).
Question Is there such thing as a miniature shetland sheepdog? My husband and I like the look and temperament of the sheltie, but we're afraid it may be still too big of a playmate for our miniature dachshund. Thanks!
Answer Hi Vanessa,
There is no such thing as a mini Sheltie. There are those who create them by crossing small dogs down. What happens is you get a dog that does resemble a Sheltie but usually with HALF the life and far greater health problems.
If you rescue a Sheltie, just take the dachshund with you to see if they get along well. If you raise a Sheltie that you buy from the HOME of a reputable breeder where you meet the bitch and she is well cared for(NEVER at pet stores, NEVER on the side of the road in a parking lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my pet peeve, trying to stop puppy mill operators!) then they will likely play well together and be gentle with each other.
Most Shelties are excellent playmates for cats and other dogs.
