Question hi we just purchased a puppy and are supposed to bring him home at 6 weeks. I was told by a coworker I should not bering a dog home till 8 but my wife who has had shelties before said she thought 6 weeks was ok. Can you help out? Thanks
Answer Hi Tom,
The debate still rages on 6 or 8. Did you note the 7th is not even debated?
Just please do keep it quiet the first two weeks. Gradually integrate and expose your pup to individual strangers (to him) and get him acclimated to his new home. No loud noises, teasing, or anything out of the ordinary in that 7th week. Just read back a few questions and you can see the terror a loud car engine once can strike into the life of a pup!
As I have noted before, we don't really know what is going on developmentally with puppies yet. The early formative development still has some sensitive points. Thus the 6 or 8 week debate.
So, if the breeder wants the 6th week I'd ask why. If they say the 8th week is ok, well, I'd recommend it. If the 6th week is fine, so be it. Just please be cognizant of my warnings until the 8th week.
