Question
We are currently trying to help our sheltie lose a few pounds by walking him twice a day.  After walking he pants heavily for up to an hour.  I am worried that he is getting overheated.  Is there a way to help him cool off?  Should we get him a "summer cut"?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Cindy,

The fastest way to help a Sheltie lose weight is to cut the food down to about a half a cup of high quality (not corn as first ingredient but meat instead) food once a day.  Give it two weeks and watch the weight fall off.

The summer cut... or "fox" cut?

Ok I must confess I've now done it:  We somehow got fleas and it was bad.  We did the groomer/ fox cut and it wasn't the end of the Sheltie world.  It takes about 6 months for the fur to really look right again.  Try it if you want to but I generally don't recommend it.  Just give a through brushing to take out the loose undercoat.

You definitely find out how MUCH fur they have!!

Hope that helps!
Dave
