Question
I realize that AKC registration is better.  I have a female yorkie that is registered with CKC.  Is there a way to have DNA testing on her and register her AKC?

Answer
No there's no way to do this because DNA only proves who the parents are, and if the parents weren't listed within a respected registry all that can be proven is the puppy is the offspring to the non-registered (AKC) parents and that can't prove they are purebred.

I know of someone who had a bitch in heat and that dog was bred to a certain stud but during her breeding stage she accidently got bred by a second male. She was able to ascertain DNA testing to prove which pups were the offspring of which male. The pups that were genetic matches received an AKC registration accordingly. The pups born of each male were registered to that sire. They were all registered (AKC) dogs of the same breed.

I just want to add that as far as registeries AKC is the ONLY real registry, in the US, that keeps records and charges fines for people who don't keep accurate records and adhere to strict breeding practices. Having said that I think an adopted dog from a shelter can be just as good a pet, and sometimes even better. My problem with CKC is that they are selling something to the public, and breeders are getting big bucks, for something that isn't what it appears. They are presenting these dogs with "papers" as if they were purebred, charging large sums of money usually, more than they'd get "without papers", but there is absolutely NO WAY to prove, and often they aren't purebred. Your yorkie may possibly be purebred but since there is no way to prove it there is no way to register them. It's a shame really and I am sorry but I know you love your baby anyway as you should.

Best of luck!
