Question We have had these for several years and this past summer they turned brown and died. We have two others and noticed they are brown towards the trunk and green on the limbs. Is this caused by an insect and how do we prevent it from killing the rest of them. We have had small ones turn brown just on the top as well.
Answer Darlene,
The browning of inner growth is normal for any evergreen going into winter dormancy.
The Arborvitae that are browning at the top have root problems. Browning from the top down is normally a sign that the root systems are not developing as rapidly as the growth of the plants. Fertilize these with a low nitrogen fertilizer to stimulate faster root growth.
