Shrubs - Forsythia bushes

Expert: Edward Gulliksen - 8/8/2007

Question
We planted our forsythias about a year ago.  The had a beautiful bloom this spring.  It is now August and all of a sudden 2 of the 3 are withering up?   We have taken care to water and fertilize per our local nursery.  Any ideas.  We have recently planted several more and would like to keep them alive!  We live in Columbia, SC.  thank you.

Answer
Sue,

I would have the soil in the area tested for any contamination. For two of three plants to decline, especially forsynthia (one of the hardest plants to kill), I would suspect that there is something going on with the soil.

I would recommend calling a local tree care company to inspect the area and the plants. They will be able to better diagnose the problem.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
