Shrubs - Maple Tree (Sugar)

Expert: Edward Gulliksen - 8/14/2007

Question
Our recently planted maple tree (within 4-5 months) has developed a wilted appearance. Leaves are turning brown and dropping off, starting from the lowest part and moving upward. The location of the tree is Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Soil-type is hard clay. It has been unusually hot/humid weather, but all other neighbours' trees appear fine, except directly to the east and west of us and a few more houses west. Other schrubs/plantings are thriving. Leaves have been eaten by something (there are holes) but no abnormal situation can be seen at this time. Have given a treatment to assist roots in acclimatizing early after planting and watering, but no other food. An image can be provided if desired. Thank you for any direction you can offer.

Answer
Marcia,

The tree is struggling due to the heat and transplant shock. You will need to keep it well watered for the rest of the summer. I would further recommend putting down a light organic fertilizer to help strengthen the tree.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
