Shrubs - cedar shrubs

Expert: Edward Gulliksen - 7/30/2007

Question
I have two cedars that are about 3 ft. tall that I want to move in my yard. How do I dig up the root ball properly? Is there a certain time of the year to do it? I also live in northern Saskatchewan, so should I wrap them during the winter months?

Answer
Creichel,

Move them in the fall and dig the root balls as large as you can comfortably handle. The larger the root ball, the more roots you will be preserving. I would recommend using burlap enclosures if they are going to be planted in an area that is prone to winter winds.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
