Silver and Flatware - Finding a reputable appraiser/dealer

Expert: Michelle Lieberman - 5/29/2009

Question
Hi Michelle,
Just discovered your website, and it's very helpful.  I have service for 12 in Towle Candlelight flatware, plus many additional pieces (fish forks, grapefruit spoons, etc.)  After what I've learned so far reading your website, I am considering taking the set in for a full appraisal.  However, I live in a rather small town in Wisconsin.  How do I find a knowledgable and reputable nearby silver appraiser (and dealer if I eventually decide to sell)?

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Carla.  With the internet at your fingertips, you don't need to be nearby to an appraiser to get the info you're looking for.

Contact the good folks at HA.com to get a free appraisal.  You will see they are an auction house, and they will also sell your set should you decide to do that.  Selling a set of sterling for maximum dollars is not an easy thing to do yourself.  You do not want to sell it to a dealer as they need to sell it themselves to make a profit, and will pay you as little as they can get away with.  A good quality auction is the best way to go.

Regards,
Michelle
