Silver and Flatware - solid silver metal flatware

Expert: Michelle Lieberman - 5/16/2009

Question
Thanks in advance for any information you can give me about several pieces of flatware that I recently purchased. The knives and forks are marked Simeon L & George H Rogers Company Solid silver metal. Are these silver plated or do they contain more silver than a plating? Any silver content value per piece. Please respond. Thanks James

Answer
Hello James.

What you have is your standard silverplate.  The marks are pointing out that the base metal is silver-colored as opposed to a copper- or brass-colored metal that shows through when the plating wears off.

Standard silverplate was made with two ounces of pure silver for every 144 pieces made, not a whole heck of a lot.

Regards,
Michelle
