Hi there, I picked up a silver platter engraved Derby Lane Trophy, Best in Show St. Petersburg Fla. 1962. It is 17" round and about 4 to 5 lbs. The back has the VERY faint word CONCORD and a possible 64. Any other Hallmark has been worn away. I guess my question is weather to sell it for silver value? (If its all silver) or would it be better to sell it as a collectable.Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Janis
Answer Hello Janis, thank you for your question.
I'm going to guess your platter is silverplate. Normally you go by the mark on the back, but since the marks have been worn away, you can't go by that. Weight is the next factor, and 4 to 5 pounds would be much too heavy for a sterling tray of that size.
However, since we aren't really sure one way or the other, it would be in your best interest to go have the metal content tested. Any good jeweler can do this for you, and it should be very inexpensive. Whether it's sterling or silverplate makes a huge difference in value, and you need to know what you have to proceed.
