I have a silverware chest with 18 pieces of sterling silver flatware in it. 8 knives 6 spoons and 4 soup spoons. the spoons have J.E.Caldwell on them. All the silverware has the monogram M on them but the pattern is just a little different on each set. I would like to know what this would be worth and how old it might be. case is red inside and is made of wood. I would appreciate any other information as well.
Answer Hello Louise. What you have is the Fairfax pattern made by the William B. Durgin Co. that came out in 1910 (J.E. Caldwell would have been the retailer). A number of different engraved styles were available for this pattern, and your engraved pieces are in the "Engraved Z" style. Gorham acquired Durgin and the Fairfax pattern continues to be made today, although not the engraved versions. Your silver has a value of about $350.
