Silver and Flatware - Sterling Silver flatware

Expert: Michelle Lieberman - 7/5/2009

Question
QUESTION: I recently acquired a 4 piece serving set (i.e., meat fork, spoon, etc.)  The fork is the only piece that bears the hallmark "A.S.C.O. 1857".  I have searched so many resources/pattern pics and can find NO information whatsoever (not even from replacements.com).

ANSWER: Hello Andrea.  The good folks at replacements.com must have been asleep on the job that day, as the American Silver Co. should be well known to them.  It was formed in 1857 when Holmes & Tuttle were acquired by the Bristol Brass & Clock Co. and given it's new name.  It was acquired by International Silver in 1935.  Your pattern should also be silverplate, not sterling.

Regards,
Michelle

QUESTION: not the best pics.

Answer
Well I've come up emptyhanded.  My sterling pattern books all have solid sterling patterns, not any sterling handled patterns.  I also checked the silverplate books just in case, nothing there either.  Lastly I went through the 75-odd pages of named and unnamed patterns at replacements.com, nothing there either.  Sorry I can't be of more help, but at least you know now who made it.
