Silver and Flatware - Sterling Silver Spoon

Expert: Michelle Lieberman - 8/9/2009

Question
I was left an assortment of sterling silver.  Most seem to be from the Lady Claire Stieff collection.  However there is a separate bigger serving-type spoon that doesn't appear to fit in the collection.  It says "sterling" on the back of the handle.  Also on the back, closer to the ladle, are three symbols: a four-legged animal of some sort with a bushy tail curving back over its back, an anchor, and a cursive letter "G".  It is 9.5 inches long.  Can you help me identify to what collection this spoon belongs and its approximate value?  Thanks so much!!

Answer
Hello Erin.

From your description it sounds like the mark for Gorham, although the G isn't cursive it's either in an Old English style or in a plain Times New Roman font.  You can find an assortment of Gorham marks on this page:

If it isn't Gorham, let me know, but then I'll need to see a picture of the mark.

What's really throwing me off is the pattern.  I have never seen a Gorham pattern like this, which is similar to the Kirk repousse styles.  From the size, it's either a berry or pudding serving spoon.  I'd give it a value of $175 to $200.

Regards,
Michelle
