Silver and Flatware/silver
Dear Mr. Stringer: I inherited a chest of silver from my grandmother's family. Aside from the service for 12 (Towle# there are a number of spoons and forks of varying sizes. I have identified some of them by visual search of some silver websites, but many are not shown anywhere and there appear to be at least 16 different patterns. #perhaps she had kleptomania?# I will, in future, send you pictures for your comments, however at this moment my only questions are; 1]what is community silver? and 2] how can I tell the difference between silver and silver plate? One piece actually has the 925/1000 on it but the others only seem to be of different weights. I see that a few say x-triple on them #one set of dessert forks dated 1847)
sorry to be so longwinded, but any answers would be most appreciated.
Start by looking for the word, "Sterling". The "925/1000" is also important (or variations of this fraction). Read the article in the list below that talks about sterling vs silver plate.
"Community" is a brand used by Oneida. Most, maybe all, of the Community patterns are silver plate. "X Triple" is a common marking on silver plate pieces. The "1847" may be a Rogers piece. That was the founding date of the company and was placed on pieces fro many years after that, even into the 20th century. That brand is now owned by International Silver.
There is an article in the list below that talks about identifying patterns. Look under Oneida and International Silver.
Finally, there is an article in the list below that talks about the value of silver plate flatware. It probably covers most, maybe all, of what you have.
If you would like to find buyers of silver, you’ll find ads from such businesses on my blog site: http://www.SilverChatter.com . Look for sellers as well because they have to buy their silver somewhere. You may have to reload the screen a few times to see all the ads.
