Silver and Flatware/value of vintage tea/coffee set
I have a silver plated coffee/tea set that a friend bought in Chile during or just after WWII. It is marked Windsor Plaque Chile 10 microns with "W" and "D" hallmarks in shields. It consists of 6 pieces, 2 large pots with attached lids, a smaller open pot, a creamer, a sugar bowl w/lid and an open bowl. There is a matching tray with a clear plastic liner. The set is very heavy with the larger pots weighing over 3.5 pounds each. I haven't been able to find reference to any set like it and would appreciate any information you have about background and potential value. Thank you.
I believe this set is made of silver plate. If I am correct, it won't have much value in terms of silver content alone. See the article in the list below that discusses sterling vs silver plate. If your set was made of sterling, I think additional marks would be on the piece to indicate that. Also the "10 microns" usually is a reference to the thickness of the layer of silver on the surface.
Sets like this often do have value based primarily on having a desirable and/or unique design. Your set appears to be in good condition and the design is attractive. It's still difficult to say but I'd guess it would bring $150 to $250 if you tried to sell it. I could be way off on this since the value is sensitive to the demand. There was a sale on eBay of a single item back in 2008: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/rare-very-old-windsor-plaque-chile-silver-
. Consider setting up a free trial on Worthpoint to see what this item sold for.
Sorry I could not help more.
If you would like to find buyers of silver, you’ll find ads from such businesses on my blog site: http://www.SilverChatter.com . Look for sellers as well because they have to buy their silver somewhere. You may have to reload the screen a few times to see all the ads.
