Question
I am interested in learning the value of silver service for 12 - Whiting Manufacturing Co. circa 1880, Italian K. I have 60 pieces in all. Were there knives made in this pattern? The knives with the set have mother of pearl handles. Is there any history available about this pattern or whose design it was? I know the original owner was a Mrs.Isabelle Doremus of NYC. She then gave it to my grandparents as a wedding gift in the 1920's.It appears to be in the original box.
The set was never engraved with a monogram.
Thanks for any info you may supply.

Answer
Hi, Cathy.

Yes, knives were made in this pattern. It could be that the original owner preferred the knives you have. Or, it could be that the blades were is such bad shape that some owner replaced the knives.

It's hard to determine the value of this set because the secondary market for this pattern is extremely thin. You can find some pieces for sale on eBay - most of them are from the same seller, Antique Cupboard. However, you can't really judge by the prices being asked. If you try to sell the set, you probably will receive much less.

A person looking for a set for personal use often is willing to pay the highest price. Finding that person is difficult.

I suggest contacting www.antiquecupboard.com and www.replacements.com and see what kind of offers they will make. That will give you the lower end of the range. Then, if you want to sell the set, try eBay yourself and look for that end user.

Best wishes,
