Silver and Flatware/1881 Rogers Oneida Silverware
A few years ago, I bought a set of flatware / silverware at a garage sale that contained 8 pieces each of knives, salad forks, dinner forks, teaspoons and place oval soup spoons. My internet sleuthing makes me think that it is the 1939 "Del Mar" pattern. This suspicion is enhanced by a paper that came with the set that, at the bottom left, had the numbers 4-46 (April 1946?). However, the difference is that my set also contains a stylized "R" at the top of each piece in the center. Was this merely a special feature of the set? A different pattern altogether? Or a unique and rare aspect of the Del Mar pattern? And, in terms of its value, does it make any difference?
Another question I had was: does this constitute all of the silverware that would have normally come with the set?
I'm guessing that the "R" is a custom monogram placed there by the original owner. Monograms usually devalue a set by 25% to 35%, but not always.
Here's a good link that illustrates most of the pieces that were available: http://www.replacements.com/webquote/OHSDEM.htm#491453
In terms of value, don't go by the prices you see on the page I referenced. An individual selling this pattern would most likely receive far less. See the article in the list below that talks about the value of silver plate flatware.
If you would like to find buyers of silver, you’ll find ads from such businesses on my blog site: http://www.SilverChatter.com . Look for sellers as well because they have to buy their silver somewhere. You may have to reload the screen a few times to see all the ads.
