Silver and Flatware/gold in color spoons

Question
Yes I have some spoons that are gold in color.  I know in 1846 it was a family members first set of flatware.  They are very plain, but on the back there are markings that consist of, it looks to me of 2 squares and 2 circles, with something inside of each.  Two of the inside designs look like a wheel, and maybe 2 swords crossed.  I was just wondering if you could tell me what exactly I have here.  Thank You

Answer
Hi, Marsha.

I'm not sure what you have. It would be a big help to see clear pictures of all the markings you described.

In 1846, markings were not very standard if existent at all. So, it is unusual to see the elaborate marks you described in the United States. British manufacturers did have a highly defined set of marks. I'm guessing that something like this made in 1846 might be coin silver with a gold plating. Gold by itself is just too soft for flatware. Or the underlying metal might be some other base metal like copper. Electroplating was still in its infancy in 1846 so I could be wrong.

If pictures are a problem, there is an article in the list below that talks about identifying the manufacturer

Best wishes,

Jim

If you would like to find buyers of silver, you’ll find ads from such businesses on my blog site: http://www.SilverChatter.com . Look for sellers as well because they have to buy their silver somewhere. You may have to reload the screen a few times to see all the ads.
