Silver and Flatware/reed and barton amaryllis 1901
Trying to find out if R+B made amaryllis in sterling and silver plate. My mom gave me a large set of flatware and I believe the pattern is amaryllis, probably a service of 10 though there are demitasse spoons and other pieces, and, of course, extra spoons. How can I tell the difference between silver and silver plat other than looking for markings or are markings the only way?
I believe they may be silver plated and the knives say mirrorstele (sp) on them.
ADDITION TO ANSWER: Check this pattern. It seems to be close to Amaryllis: http://www.replacements.com/webquote/RDSTIL.htm#4191655
Reed & Barton followed the American practice of marking sterling pieces with the word, "Sterling", or at least "925", especially by the time this pattern was introduced in 1901. See the article below that talks about sterling vs silver plate.
I have had similar questions about other R&B patterns. I've not been able to determine if R&B made the patterns in question both sterling and silver plate but I get the question often enough to wonder. As far as I know, Amaryllis was a sterling pattern only but I cannot say with 100% certainty. R&B knife blades were made of stainless steel so "Mirrorstele" only applies to the blades. You may find other marks on the handles. Sometimes a magnifying glass is required.
If you would like to ask a followup with a picture of a fork or spoon, I'll check further.
If you would like to find buyers of silver, you’ll find ads from such businesses on my blog site: http://www.SilverChatter.com . Look for sellers as well because they have to buy their silver somewhere. You may have to reload the screen a few times to see all the ads.
