Silver and Flatware/Your expertise please
I have a set of Rogers & Bros. silverware. It's marked Rogers & Bro XII IS on the back. After looking it up on a website, I found that it is the "Elite" pattern from 1934. I have the box that holds the silverware, as well as an almost-complete set of silverware (8 dinner knives, 1 HF butter knife, 8 normal-length forks, 12 long forks, 16 teaspoons, 8 soup spoons, 8 salad forks, 3 serving spoons, 8 long ice tea spoons, 1 sugar spoon). In addition, and not part of the set, are 2 salad spoons (one has teeth) marked silver plated Sheffield England. Appreciate any/all info. Appreciate you expertise.
Thank You, Mike
You may already have determined that the "IS" represents International Silver which took over this brand in 1898. They continued to use the brand for many years.
The reference book, "Silver Plated Flatware, Revised 4th edition", by Tere Hagan, grades this pattern as "Seldom Collectible". This means there is not a great demand for pieces or there is a huge supply on the market, or both. The author states that patterns of this grade will sell in the $0.50 to $1.50 per piece when sold by an individual (not a dealer) and when the pieces are in top notch condition. That really does not have much to do with the quality of the pieces. It has more to do with supply and demand.
Hope this helps.
