Silver and Flatware/1847 Rogers Brothers Flatware

Question
I was given a service for eight of this flatware plus serving pieces and other extra pieces. I have the original wooden box that the service for eight came in and is in excellent shape. The pattern is "Community". I can't seem to find any information on it. I can remember my grandmother cleaning it and using it for special occasions.  I do know that at least parts of the pieces are stainless, I believe that the handle parts may be silver plated..but not sure.  I know that this silver is at least 60 years old, my grandmother has passed and the set was given to me.  I don't know if  I need to insure this as I am not sure of how to get a monetary value on it.

Answer
Hi, Debra.

This brand is now owned by International Silver. References on the Internet (such as at www.replacements.com) probably will list it under International Silver. The "1847" refers to the founding date of the company and has no relationship to date of manufacture.

I could not find a pattern from 1847 Rogers named "Community". This might have been used as a family of patterns. Most often, the name is associated with a line of flatware from Oneida.

Your set most likely is made of silver plate. See the article in the listing below that discusses sterling vs silver plate. Here is a website that may help verify the pattern: http://sterlingflatwarefashions.com/index.html . Look under the silver plate listings for 1847 Rogers and International Silver.

Since I have not been able to verify the pattern, I can't say for certain regarding value.  I can say that the vast majority of silver plate flatware patterns have low resale values. See the article in the list below that discusses the value of silver plate flatware. The values discussed apply if you tried to sell the set. However, you asked about insurance value which could be higher because if you had to find a replacement set, you might have to pay a dealer higher prices. If you can find the pattern at www.replacements.com, I recommend using their prices as insurance value.

If you would like to attach a picture of the front of a fork or teaspoon to a follow up question, I'll try to verify the pattern for you.

Best wishes,

Jim
