Silver and Flatware/trivet from Bailey Banks & Biddle
I have been trying to find information on a trivet. It is an expandable silver(or plated?) trivet. The design is ornate and it has tiny wheels on the back. "Bailey Banks & Biddle" is engraved on the back as well. Can you shed some light on this?
Since there is no mark or word to indicate sterling content, it most likely is made of silver plate. See the article in the list below that discusses sterling vs silver plate. Or, if it's old enough, it could be made of coin silver. Without further marks, it's difficult to say. I believe the name, "Bailey, Banks & Biddle" originated in 1878. By that time, most sterling pieces manufactured in the U.S. were being marked with the word, "Sterling".
You might take this by a shop specializing in estate silver or by a high-end antique shop to see what they can tell about the piece.
