Silver and Flatware/Advice on what to do with these?

Question
antique flatware
antique flatware
I have some spoons that belonged to my parents that were found after they passed.  I don't know what I should do with this flatware.  Is it worth investigating or do I just have old spoons and forks? Further, if I ought to take them in to be appraised, what steps do I need to take to make sure I get a valid appraisal.

The image is the full set of mis-matched flatware that was found but I can provide other pictures if necessary.

Thank you very much!

Answer
Hello.

The first thing to do is to determine which pieces are made of sterling. Look on the back for the word, "Sterling". Some pieces might have "925" instead. This stands for 92.5% silver which is what sterling is.

Any sterling pieces will have some value simply because of their silver content. If a piece is not made of sterling, it's highly likely it's made of silver plate. Generally, silver plate pieces have a low value, maybe a dollar each. Some have higher values if there is a reason such as a highly collectible souvenir spoon.

It's difficult to place a value range on a piece without knowing the manufacturer and pattern. Many times, the words or symbols on the back will identify the manufacturer but generally not the pattern.

In the list of articles below, you may find a few of interest. I wouldn't pay an appraiser until you have a better idea of which pieces are made of sterling. If you can identify manufacturer and pattern for a piece, look for actual sales on eBay of pieces like yours. You'll have a better idea of value after that.

Hope this helps you get started.

Best wishes,

Jim
