Question
QUESTION: Hi,
We have a family plate marked with the eagle then WM Rogers and a star then 4283. Was this made by International Silver? What would be the approx date? Is it silver plate or solid silver? If we were to sell it what might it's value be (it's in good condition) and where would be the best place to sell it?
With thanks

ANSWER: Hello.

Item number 4283 is listed by www.replacements.com as being made by International Silver under the Wm Rogers brand. http://www.replacements.com/webquote/INS4283.htm I don't know the age but it had to have been after 1898. The listing at Replacements indicates this plate is made of sterling. If so, you should find the word, "Sterling", on the bottom.

If it is made of sterling, it could have significant value. My suggestion is to try to sell it on eBay. Its value will be affected by its weight. Here's an example of a piece sold recently on eBay. It's not the same as yours but maybe it will give you an idea of value. http://www.ebay.com/itm/International-Sterling-Silver-Prelude-W46-Tray-or-Plate- .

Once you have reviewed my answer, feel free to ask a follow up.

Best wishes,

Jim

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt answer- that's really helpful. We cannot find 'sterling' on the bottom with the other markings and I guess that is where it would be. So would that mean it is silver plate?
Thanks again
Denise

Answer
Normally the absence of the word, "Sterling", does mean silver plate. The odd thing here is that the model number for this item at Replacements.com references a sterling piece. So, I can't say with certainty because if this inconsistency. It might be worth taking it by a high-end antique shop for another look.
