Silver and Flatware/Rogers silverplate flatware set

Question
Mr. Stringer,

I have a Wm. Rogers silver flatware set that belonged to my husband's grandmother. It is a service for 8 and contains 42 pieces. It is in a case. The case includes a Wm. Rogers guarantee stating that it is "Famous Rogers Silverplate" made exclusively by the International Silver Company.

There is also a card from Hostess Home Accessories, Inc., an inspection slip from Factory H in Meriden, Connecticut, silver polishing cloth and the original sales receipt listing the pattern as Roxanne. The sales slip is dated Oct. 1929 with a purchase price of $19.93 for the set and $3.50 for the chest plus tax and credit service charge for a total of $25.50.

I have tried to find the value of the set but, I am having trouble finding the Roxanne pattern. Would it be worth more due to what is included in the chest?

Any information you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank you

Answer
Hello.

The Wm. Rogers brand was taken over by International Silver Company in 1898. International introduced a pattern called Roxanne in 1966. A picture is shown on this page: http://sterlingflatwarefashions.com/SPPatterns/Intl2.html . But this date does not seem to fit well with your receipt.

Unfortunately, used silver plate flatware generally does not hold its value very well. Used pieces often sell for a dollar or so per piece. I could not find sales of International Roxanne to verify this.

Since there is some uncertainty regarding dates, further investigation might be needed.

Best wishes,

Jim
