Sleep Apnea - Can sleep apnea cause swelling of the feet

Expert: Michael Rush - 10/18/2009

Question
Hi my name is Kim. I have been diagnosed wth Sleep Apnea about two years ago. I don't have the correct machine(CPAP) that my doctor requested that I have because my insurance would not approve the calim. I did get a machine(VPAP III) and it was set at the settings for me by the sleep study group but I don't sleep with the machine at night cause it is so uncomfortable. Now my feet has been swelling a lot and my doctor says it's because i am not sleeping with my machine at night. I don' believe that because I have not slept with that machine for over a year now and now all of a sudden my feet has been swelling off and on for the last month. I need another opinion because I am tired of hurting and swelling. My doctor has requested a new sleep study to be done also.

Answer
Hi Kim,

Sleep apnea causes ALOT of problems. When you stop breathing your brain thinks you are suffocating and will divert blood away from other organs to keep your brain and heart going. If your kidney function is decreased you can get swelling of your feet. USE YOUR MACHINE!!! It can't help you unless you use it. Nobody likes it. Everybody hates it. But you have to use!
