Subject: Hypnogogia
Question Okay, I figured I might have this just now. It's only happened to me twice, the first time a few months ago and the second time just this week. My Question is, is this hypnogogia or some kind of sleeping disorder, narcolepsy?
The first time it happened during waking. I didn't have any hallucinations or anything but I was conscious, my body was paralyzed, I couldn't speak. I remember feeling afraid and trying to wake/go back to sleep and like my eyes would flutter or try to open. It happened for a few seconds, unless I was still in it because when I tried to go back to sleep, it happened again. The third time I just woke up because i felt afraid. The Second time happened this week and it was the same thing except I was going to sleep and it happened about four times in a row, and I really felt like maybe I shouldn't go to sleep that night.
Just like the other person who asked uh something about this, I'd like to know. I asked this question on yahoo answers, but people told me to go to a doctor. But ya know I just want to make sure I know what's going on and if this is right...
Answer Yes what you had is a combination of sleep paralysis and hypnangogic hallucinations. Now its normal natural phenomenon that happens once in awhile in our lives. Only when it happens frequently is it a symptom of narcolepsy. If your daytime wakefulness is not affected then just chalk it up as normal. What happens is that instead of the body and brain falling asleep together like they should once in awhile there is a few seconds lag which makes this happen. If you want to read a more concise explanation go to sleepnet.com click on disorders narcolepsy, then look for the symptoms. I repeat you dont have narcolepsy, if this happens lets say more than 10 times a year then i would only get a sleep study but once or twice, just relax. Feel free to email again karel
