Subject: a sudden shock
Question Hello! I'm a 16 year old female... and I recently noticed a slight issue when I sleep. I don't have any sleeping disorders that I know of. But whenever I sleep or take a quick rest (5 mins), I notice a quick reaction waking me up. I feel a sudden burst of shock causing my body to "pop up." It's a bit similar to a quick reaction when someone scares you. I don't have any discomforts when I sleep at all either. Thank you for heling me!
Answer It could just be your not being fully asleep. Naps should be at least 29 minutes long no longer. I suggest you might try setting an alarm and sleeping for the 20 minutes and see if it happens. Sometimes when the body relaxes our reflexes can jerk but just once not constantly. If your daytime wakefullness is beong affected then I would worry. Or if this happens every time you fall off to sleep you might consider seeing a neurologist, but if it happens only once in ahile what is happening is called hypnangogic hallucinations, its when instead of the body and brain falling off to sleep together they lag by about a second so you are stuck between dream and wakefullnes and everything is so distorted and frightening. However this is natural phenomenon if we get it once in awhile. If it happens repeatedly it could be a symptom of narcolepsy, which is a sleep disorder which is uncontrollable urge to fall asleep at inappropriate times. If you go to sleepnet.com click on disorders narcole4psy go down to 2 symptoms, sleep paralysis and hypnangogic hallucinations. If this persists you might want to get a neurological consultation but I would just wait and see. feel free to email again karel
