Sleep Disorders - addiction to sleeping pill, temazapam

Expert: Karel Sleis - 3/17/2006

Question
I've been taking temazapam sleeping meds for 7 years now, 4 nights a week, 30mg dose. I  take risperdal for schizophrenia and risperdal causes my sleep disorder, can't sleep.  I am less responsive to the sleeping pills now and go without them for weeks to try to break the addiction to them, but I get horrible night mares bad dreams without the sleeping pills. What would a doctor prescribe to solve this problem, different sleeping pills, another chemical, I don't want to increase the dose of sleeping pill and make my addiction worse ! Please tell me what I can do or expect with my dilema, Thanks

Answer
Unfortunately I suffer from the same thing as im on opiates now not for my narcolepsy but for severe nueralgia of the brain and a bleed which i believe cme from the ghb i tried for my narcolepsy via a trial study but no one believes that any way, the drug that works for all side effects only if severe is ativan, but you only take it when severe not every night, its only given in 0.5 mg, usually the emergency room administer it via iv when this happens so if you went in and told them you were going thru a medical drug side effect they may give it however with your schizophrenia i dont know if its given you would have to ask your doctor. Its ativan ,feel free to email again, good luck, karel
