Answer
Hi Vineet,

I am from Bratislava, and I am a software engineer myself, but I am currently working in Prague. I hope the information will be up-to-date.

With four years of experience, I think you should expect (or ask for) a salary on the order of 40000 to 70000 Slovak crowns, which is something like 2000 to 3500 USD.

The living costs are lower than in Western Europe, but I suppose still higher than in India. I will try to give you some prices in Slovak crowns (Sk); remember the salary is 40 to 70k, which will leave you with 30 to 50k net salary (after taxes):
- 12000 - 20000 Sk a month for flat, energies etc.
- 10000 - 20000 Sk a month for food for two (about 200 per person per day would include a lunch out every day, and an occasional dinner out - or it can be more if you eat out a lot),
- 1500 Sk a month for public transport for two.

You can easily find a flat for 12000, and eat for 10000 (the lower limits I mention), but you might prefer to spend 20000 on living and 20000 on your meals. I can't really tell...

Those are the costs you can't really escape. The rest depends on your lifestyle. A cinema for 200 Sk per person. A round trip to Vienna for 300 Sk per person. A pair of jeans for 300 - 1500 Sk.

As for Indian population, I think it's quite sparse in Bratislava. But if you get a chance to work in Prague, it's a bigger city, and more cosmopolitan. I have two Indian colleagues myself...

Another aspect you should consider is rejection from primitive people here. You probably know what I mean - and that's a danger wherever you go in Europe. There are people - me being one of them - hugely in favour of multicultural environment; then there is the majority which doesn't mind or care about foreigners (and is used to them); but you may also encounter a xenophobic or racist person that does mind - and you might even become a target of aggression.

I don't want to discourage you from coming. On the contrary. However, I don't want to paint a picture of "heaven on earth" when it's not. Bratislava has its problems, and you should know.

Either way, I hope it works out for you, and you enjoy it wherever you end up. As they say, try different places to live, and settle down where you like it...

(I am sorry for not replying directly to your email; I need the AllExperts system to notice that the question has been answered.)

Good luck, Vineet!

Sam
