Slovakia - IT jobs in Slovakia

Expert: Sam - 9/11/2009

Question
Hi Sam,
I am an Indian and I am getting married to a Slovak.Right now I am doing my masters in Computer Applications.I will come to Slovakia in July-August after my 6 months internship at an IT company here.

There are a few things I wanted to know about:

1. How much salary should I expect as it will be my first job?
2. What are the working conditions like?
3. Do I need to know Slovak in order to get a job?  Ofcourse I will learn but I think it may take a year or so.I also know some German.
4. Are all big companies located in Bratislava?

ThankYou
Nandita

Answer
Hi Nandita,

1. I am not exactly sure. I would say you can expect between 700 - 1000 Euros,
based on what job you actually get, and how they like you.

2. Do you mean the situation in the market? I think IT companies are still
hiring, despite the crisis. You should be able to find an IT position even if
you don't speak Slovak, perhaps the company where you do your internship would
be interested in signing a proper contract after the internship is up.

3. Well, the language is certainly a plus. There are companies where you must
speak Slovak, since it's the working language. So your choice will be limited.
Nevertheless, there are still many where you needn't speak Slovak. You can also
consider finding a job in Vienna (1-hour train ride from Bratislava), where you
could use your German. But I am not sure if your working permit would qualify
you for a job in Austria.

4. Pretty much so. Sure there are IT companies in all cities, but the bigger
companies (those are the ones where you are likely to get away with just
English) will mostly be in Bratislava.

I hope that helps.

Sam
