Slovakia - travel to Eastern Europe

Question
Hi sam, Me and my wife intend travelling to Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria this year around May/June. Is this a good time to travel? If not what is the best time to be in this region. What would be a good time to set aside for a tour to these four countries? The idea is to get a feel of the country and visit the sites worth seeing. We are not interested in the rushing kind of a trip. Need some time to relax and see at the same time. Not much into skiing /  hiking etc. If you could suggest a sample itinerary it would be great.

Nitin.

Answer
Hello Nitin,

actually, I think May/June may be the best months to travel here. It's not the
peak tourist season (which is in July and August), so the prices may be lower,
hotels emptier, tourist sites will be less frequented.

Time: much depends on your personal preferences. I would say two or three weeks
could be nice. You should consider the traveling in between the different
destinations. If you need to take a 5-hour bus ride and the bus leaves at 11am,
that may just about fill up most of your day since you can't do much before nor
after...

Itinerary: in Slovakia I would recommend to visit the High Tatras or Slovensky
Raj even if you're not into hiking. Bratislava, Kosice, Levoca, Kremnica, Banska
Stiavnica, some spa towns (Trencianske Teplice, Bardejov), Herlany, caves
(Dobsinska, Demanovska), Spissky hrad... These would be some of my favourites in
Slovakia.

In the other countries I really don't know. In Hungary, do go and see Budapest,
it's beautiful. Hungary is also well known for its spas. In Bulgaria, there is
Nessebar at the coast, there are some really neat monasteries. I have never been
to Romania.

I hope that helps.

Enjoy the trip!

Sam
