Slovakia - Budapest to Slovakia

Expert: Sam - 10/7/2007

Question
Dobry Den Sam,

I am travelling to Budapest in a few weeks. I would love to cross into Slovakia for a day trip but am unsure how to do so. I have family in Soporna and studied at Studia Akademika Slovaka at Komenskeho University so I am comfortable in Slovakia. However, being limited to a day trip and never having been to that corner of Slovakia I am not sure where to go. It is too far to travel to Bratislava- about 3 hours by car? I cannot just stop in at my family's house because I have too many cousins and would have to visit them all. But I would love to show my husband more of Slovakia. How far is Komarno, or the Gabčíkovo Dam? I wish Cicmany was close enough for us to see. I would love to show him the old Slovakia. any suggestions that you can give would be welcome.

Dakujem,

Alzbetka

Answer
Hello Alzbetka,

you have mentioned a car, so I will assume you have one. I think you should be able to make it from Budapest to Bratislava in two hours easily. It's around 130 miles, highway all the way, even 1.5 hrs should be possible. I am sure you would know what to show your husband in Bratislava...

But of course Komarno is closer, only around 50 miles from Budapest. I have never been there, or in the vicinity, so I don't really know what to recommend. But I believe Komarno itself should be quite nice to visit.

The Gabcikovo Dam is halfway through from Komarno to Bratislava... So maybe you could visit Komarno in the morning, then drive to the dam, and stretch the trip to Bratislava, which is quite nice in the evening, take a walk through the Old Town, drop in to your favourite cafe and then drive home. On the way to Bratislava you would have to use the normal roads, but the way back would be fast and comfy since you could use the highway...

If you visit Komarno, don't forget to check out the Hungarian side of the town too, I heard it was quite nice. There is an old fortress there, I think.

For other tips, I would recommend to see the Cerveny Kamen castle (near Modra, 25 miles north of Bratislava), Trnava or Nitra if you want some nice old towns (and they are both quite close to Soporna), or Levice, which is a small town, but has a nice little castle. Or even Vienna, which would not serve your goal to show some Slovakia to your husband, but which is well worth visiting once you're in the region (especially if you're from far away).

I suppose the north of Slovakia offers more things to see and do, with all the mountains and hot springs and stuff, and all the things that come to my mind are from up there.

If you need information about distances, you will find all the places mentioned on maps.google.com, and you can check the distances there.

If you need some more information (e.g. if my assumption you had a car available was wrong), please do not hesitate to contact me.

I hope your trip goes well and that you enjoy it :-)

Sam
