AboutSam Expertise I can answer questions about the country`s history, culture, politics, economy, geography. I speak fluent Slovak. If you are planning a visit, I can recommend the places to see - especially the nature in Slovakia is worth it.
Experience I am a Slovak which makes me an expert in the language and culture. I am also a traveller so I know Slovakia quite well. I will do anything to find out the answer to your question.
Question I have a question in regards to a dish my Slovak grandmother(now deceased) used to make on Christmas Eve. I am not even sure how it is spelt, but I will write it(sound it out) in English as I do not know the Slovak language. My grandmother called it "bowbiecki" and it was little sauteed bread doughs with sauer kraut. Can you give me the correct spelling on this, and any suggestions on how I might obtain this recipe?
Thanks, Nancy
Answer Hi Nancy,
I know exactly what meal you mean. My family calls it "opekance" and my wife's family "bobalky", which is very close to what your grandmother used to call it. It is a traditional Christmas meal for some families, but not for all. My wife and I love them!
There are different varieties, though. My wife's family always made them with sauerkraut (kind of salty), while my mother always made them with poppy seeds (sweet). Some people make them with sheep cheese... But the bread doughs are always the same.
I have found several recipes online, but they are all in Slovak. I will try and translate them for you later on today. Are you OK with that?
