Slovakia - slovak unemployed

Expert: Sam - 2/5/2007

Question
How much does an unemloyed person with no professional background or education in slovak get money from government per month? Does education affect the money received?

Thanks in advance...

Answer
Hi,

I have made some research, but I am no expert in the subject. Here's what I've found:

You are only eligible for the unemployment support if you have been paying your social insurance in the past three years (which is what your employer does for you if you are employed). After you lose your job, you are eligible for the support for 6 months, not more. And you get 50% of your salary from the govt. So the idea behind the support is that you are looking for a job and that you had better find one soon (6 months).

When I say 50% of your salary, this is the average salary over the past 2 or 3 years (there are different cases).

So the support depends more on your previous work position than on your educational background, I would say.

If you are asking how much that is, I would say about $150 a month. That is, I would say, 50% of the salary of a person who may have problem finding a job. Educated, better-paid people, rarely seek this support. (I'm sure this seems quite little, but the living costs are considerably lower here than in the States or in Western Europe, so it's not as critical as it seems.)

Then there is something like social support - this is for the needy ones. If your income (unemployment support included) is lower than some amount, you get some social money to help you survive.

Hope this has helped. If not, feel free to ask further questions.

Sam
