Subject: Non profit organization

Question
Hello.  I was told by my wife that some law firms will set your non profit up for you for free because they have to perform a certain amount of free service every year. If this is true, how do I find the firms that will do it?

Answer
Many law firms, particularly very large law firms, will provide pro bono (i.e., free) legal services to low income individuals and non-profit organizations.  In some larger cities, much of the work is channeled through a central organization.  In many places, however, each law firm deals with requests that come directly to it.

There are also many independent organizations which offer pro bono legal services.

A good place to start is by going to the American Bar Association's web page Consumers' Guide to Legal Help:
http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/findlegalhelp/home.cfm

You can also try contacting large firms in your area and simply ask them if they they assist not-for-profit organizations on a pro bono basis.

Good luck.
