Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.) - 18 B&S Engine - Starting Running Problems

Expert: John C. Bridgers Sr. - 7/2/2007

Question
Hi John, Had sent you an earlier Email  on 6/16/07 relative  hard starting and stops running. your return email advised to check the fuel solenoid however from the exploded view of the downdraft Flo-jet with integral fuel pump carbureter, I do not see this solenoid. The bowl is full of fuel but it starts only momentarily and then dies. I reset the gap to.020 as you suggested and it has fresh fuel and filter, new plugs, checked compression 75 -85 lbs. flywheel keyway ok. Please advise how to proceed and how to contact you after your response if problem persists. Thank you in advance for you time and consideration.

Answer
Hello Again Kevin:

Yes I Remember. This is a B&S Model 422707-1214. I am Allowed to Answer 10 Questions a Day. If you See I am Maxxed Out, then Try Submitting you Question at or Just After 9pm EST (US). May New Day Starts then. The Fuel Shut Off Solenoid is Optional on this Engine. That was the Reason I Suggest you Check it. The Solenoid is Breakdown # 947A Shown in the Carburetor File at the Site Addy I Sent you. The Compression is Low, But the Engine Shoould Still Run. It May Not Idle Properly, but it Should Run at Mid and Upper Throttle Ranges. If you are Sure the Carburetor is Clean (soaked overnight in Carburetor Cleaner), then I Suggest you Remove Cylinder Head and Check for Burnt Valves. I am Thinking the Carburetor Jets are Still Restricted. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

Respectfully

John
