I have the SV-590 19 hp Kohler and had the same problem.

Kohler has modified a newer valve cover with extra support on the bottom 3 bolt holes. Sold as a kit on a parts list. Mine was part # 20 096 14-S. Mine lasted 5 years before it began leaking.

Above answer is all correct.. I'd like to add that I changed my oil before storing for winter (riding mower. I must've overfilled because the excess oil leaked from gasket onto muffler.  When I started it a ton of smoke came from engine- I thought I'd blown a head gasket.  

But just changed valve cover gasket - about 15 minutes and ran engine until all the oil burned off and no problems...
