About Eric A. Jones
Expertise Lawnmower Repair . Certified Master Service Technician from B&S. Have 13 years experience on B&S, Lawn Chief, Weed Eater, Echo, Peerless, Wheel Horse, Snapper, Atlas, MTD, McCulloch, Homelite and many other numerous brands. Specialize in electrical repair.
Experience Born and raised in the midwest. Started tinkering with engines when I was about 14 on my Suzuki RM-80. I began lawn mower repair at a small hardware store. I knew absolutely nothing. I read lots of repair manuals and met an older fellow who taught me many lessons. I continued working on small engines through high school and paid my way through college working on mowers at the same hardware store. Decided to get away from the midwest and mower repair so I joined the Air Force. I repaired air traffic control electronic equipment and ended up in Hawaii where I got a part time job at Small Engine Clinic. I gained a lot of experience from the Small Engine Clinic and had a blast repairing small engines. I then took the Briggs and Stratton Master Service Technician test and earned my MST. I then traveled to Wisconsin where I attended the factory update training seminar and received formal training. I received a scholarship from the Air Force and am currently pursuing another degree.

Subject: GX160 wont start
Question QUESTION: I have a 5.5 hp honda GX160 motor and it wont start. It ran fine and one day it started messing up so i took the carburator apart to clean it and i took the main jet out to clean it and i lost it. I ordered a new jet and put it in and while it was sittin i made sure it had clean gas in it and changed the oil. I got the new(stock) jet in it and everything together and it wont start. It has awesome fire but it seems like i will pull and pull and then take the spark plug out but it is still dry. I sprayed it down with carb cleaner but it still didnt help so i dont know what to do from here im tired of struggling with it, do i need a new carburator?
ANSWER: If you spray starting fluid directly into the carb throat, will the engine try to start?
Let me know.

QUESTION: I sprayed some in there and it didnt do anything but shoot a little flame out of the pipe(straight pipe) ... it didnt like fire up or anything but it seem like it burnt it
ANSWER: Remove the valve cover and make sure both valves are moving. When you pull the string the vavles should move quickly. Sticky valves will generally close slower as the spring tries to close them. Are you familar with checking valve clearance?
Let me know.

QUESTION: Yeah their both moving but im not sure exactly how fast they are sapose to move. Im not familiar with the clearance or anything but thats what i thought the problem might be and i wanted to take the head off and look at them but didnt wanna mess anything up anymore than it already is
Answer Are you familer with top-dead-center? Set the piston at TDC, I insert a WD-40 straw or similar soft flexible tube in through the spark plug hole to feel when the piston is at the top of the cylinder. At TDC, check the valve clearance with a feeler gauge. You should have .004 inches of clearane.
Let me know what the valve clearances measure.
